The most common question...

What Is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological transition that marks the end of a woman's menstrual periods.

It is officially reached after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, provided there isn't another explanation for the absence of periods.

But menopause isn't a single event. The transition leading up to menopause—known as perimenopause—can last for several years and may bring a variety of physical, emotional, and hormonal changes.

As ovarian hormone production changes, women may experience symptoms affecting:

  • Sleep
  • Temperature regulation
  • Mood
  • Energy
  • Sexual health
  • Vaginal and urinary health
  • Bone health
  • Overall quality of life

Menopause is normal. Struggling with disruptive symptoms doesn't mean you simply have to live with them.

Common Menopause Symptoms

Menopause symptoms can be different for every woman.

Some women experience significant symptoms, while others experience relatively few.

Common symptoms may include:

Hot Flashes & Night Sweats

Sudden feelings of heat, sweating, flushing, or nighttime awakenings

Sleep Problems

Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking frequently during the night..

Brain Fog

Difficulty concentrating, remembering things, or feeling mentally sharp.

Fatigue & Low Energy

Feeling tired even after what should be adequate rest.

Changes in Libido

A decrease in sexual desire or changes in sexual function.

Vaginal Changes

Dryness, irritation, discomfort with intercourse, or other genitourinary symptoms.

Changes in Weight or Body Composition

Changes in how and where your body stores fat or difficulty maintaining your previous weight.

Mood Changes

Irritability, mood swings, or changes in emotional well-being.

Changes in Your Period

During perimenopause, menstrual cycles may become irregular, heavier, lighter, longer, or shorter before eventually stopping.

Don't see your symptoms on this list?

That doesn't necessarily mean they're unrelated to menopause.

Your symptoms, health history, and overall health should be considered together.

Perimenopause vs. Menopause

What's the difference?

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause.

During this time, hormone levels can fluctuate and menstrual cycles may become unpredictable. Women can begin experiencing symptoms even though they are still having periods.

Menopause

Menopause occurs when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.

Postmenopause

The years following menopause are referred to as postmenopause.

Symptoms don't necessarily stop the moment menopause occurs. Some women continue experiencing symptoms for years after their final menstrual period.

The important thing to remember:

You don't have to wait until your periods stop to talk with a healthcare professional about symptoms.

If you're experiencing changes that are affecting your quality of life, an evaluation can help you understand what may be happening.

How Can Menopause Affect Your Daily Life?

Menopause isn't simply about your menstrual cycle.

For some women, symptoms can affect virtually every part of daily life.

Your Sleep

Night sweats and hormonal changes can contribute to disrupted sleep, leaving you tired the next day.

Your Work

Brain fog, fatigue, and poor sleep can make it harder to concentrate and stay productive.

Your Relationships

Changes in mood, energy, libido, or sexual comfort can affect intimate relationships.

Your Confidence

Changes in your body, energy, skin, sleep, or sexual health can change the way you feel about yourself.

Your Overall Well-Being

When multiple symptoms occur at the same time, it can feel as though your entire body has changed.

You aren't imagining the changes—and you don't have to navigate them alone

Menopause Treatment Options

There isn't one treatment that is right for every woman.

Menopause care should take into consideration your:

  • Symptoms
  • Age and stage of menopause
  • Medical history
  • Family history
  • Personal risk factors
  • Current medications
  • Lifestyle
  • Individual health goals
  • Preferences regarding treatment

Depending on your individual circumstances, options may include:

Lifestyle & Wellness Strategies

Nutrition, physical activity, strength training, sleep, stress management, and other healthy lifestyle strategies can be important components of midlife health.

Nonhormonal Treatments

Some menopause symptoms may be addressed with nonhormonal medications or other approaches.

Local Treatments

Certain vaginal and genitourinary symptoms may benefit from localized treatments.

Hormone Therapy

For appropriately selected women, hormone therapy may be an option for managing certain bothersome menopause symptoms.

The goal is not to prescribe the same treatment to every woman. The goal is to determine which options may be appropriate for you.

Hormone Therapy & BHRT

Could Hormone Therapy Be Right for You?

As women move through perimenopause and menopause, levels of estrogen and other reproductive hormones change.

For some women, hormone therapy may be an appropriate option for managing certain menopause symptoms.

At the Center for Hormone Health & Wellness, we can discuss whether hormone therapy—including Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)—may be appropriate based on your individual situation.

BHRT may be considered as part of an individualized approach to symptoms such as:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Certain sleep-related concerns
  • Vaginal symptoms
  • Sexual health concerns
  • Other symptoms associated with changing hormone levels

However, hormone therapy isn't appropriate for everyone, and treatment decisions should take your medical history, symptoms, risk factors, and goals into consideration.

It's not about simply “balancing your hormones.”

It's about understanding you.

Your symptoms.
Your health history.
Your goals.
Your options.

Why Individualized Menopause Care Matters

There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all menopause experience.

Two women of the same age can have completely different symptoms, health histories, concerns, and treatment needs.

That's why we believe menopause care should begin with listening and evaluation—not assumptions.

At your consultation, we can discuss:

Your symptoms
What you're experiencing and how it is affecting your life.

Your health history
Relevant medical conditions, medications, family history, and other factors.

Your goals
What you would most like to improve.

Your options
Potential lifestyle, nonhormonal, and hormonal approaches that may be appropriate for you.

Your questions
Because you should understand your options before making healthcare decisions.

You deserve more than:

“That's just menopause.”

You deserve an opportunity to understand what's happening and discuss what can be done.
